MHNF-Draft OHV Management Plan Released - Public Meeting Scheduled

Sandy, OR – Mt. Hood National Forest has released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) which documents and discloses potential environmental effects of designating a system of roads, trails, and areas for off highway vehicles (OHV).
Two open houses are planned during September to help explain the Draft EIS and to answer questions from interested people. On September 15, an open house will be sponsored by Mt. Hood National Forest at University Place Hotel & Conference Center, 310 SW Lincoln, Portland, and again on September 16 at the Hood River Inn, 1108 East Marine Way, in Hood River. Both open houses will start at 6:00 pm. and end at 8:30 p.m.

This Draft Plan strives to balance recreation opportunities for OHV use with other recreational uses of the national forest and with resource sustainability. The proposed action would change OHV access through much of Mt. Hood National Forest in order the meet the intent of the Travel Management Rule of 2005.

Mt. Hood National Forest is now seeking comments from those who may be interested in or affected by this project. The Forest is providing a 60 day public comment period for this DEIS beginning on August 28, 2009. Written comments must be received by October 28, 2009. For more information, to view a copy of the DEIS, or to learn how to submit written comments, please visit Mt. Hood National Forest’s web site at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mthood/projects/
